ARTÈXTIL FACTORY RENOVATION
4th PRICE. UAB (UNIVERSITAT AUTÒNOMA DE BARCELONA)
SABADELL
2024 — WITH BAYONA VALERO & MUSQUERA ARQUITECTURA
The intervention strategies for the Artèxtil warehouse are centered around enhancing its heritage value while maintaining respect for its existing character. The design approach emphasizes a harmonious dialogue between the old and the new. Central to this approach is the concept of embracing the void as a foundational principle, utilizing light and air as architectural elements to highlight the warehouse's roof structure and emphasizing the play of natural light through zenithal openings. A spacious atrium connects and animates the two project phases, serving as a versatile space for educational and cultural activities. This atrium links distinct areas with different circulation patterns, creating cohesion across levels.
The proposal prioritizes the preservation of all cataloged elements, celebrated and integrated into the rehabilitated spaces, emphasizing their historical significance. Overall, the design opens the university to the city, creating a welcoming and accessible environment linked to a future public square. The large void within the warehouse not only preserves historical value but also serves as a unifying element that defines the entire project.
